With a population of around 2.6 million people, Osaka is the region's capital city and stands next to the Yodo River. A city of history and commerce, Osaka has long been one of the most prominent cities of industry in the whole of Japan and is also known for its busy port. With 24 different wards, known locally as 'ku', the city is split into two main areas, the north (Kita) and the south (Minami).
Outside of the city, to the north-west and close to the city of Itami, the Osaka Itami International Airport (ITM) is the area's main domestic airport. Sited in the city of Toyonaka and within Japan's Osaka Prefecture, Itami Airport is linked to the city via the Osaka Monorail, buses and shuttles.

The lively Central Business District (CBD) is located in the Umeda area and is dominated by high-rise structures, top hotels and many popular karaoke bars. Central Osaka is easy to get around and contains plenty of subway stations.
Nearby, the Shinsaibashi and Ebisubashi areas of Osaka are particularly lively and youthful. Around the Triangle Park area you will find endless fashion boutiques, record shops, dining venues and bars. Nearby, both Naniwa-suji Street and Yotsubashi-suji Street are two prominent arteries, featuring a number of popular shops and the enormous Daimaru department store. Other noteworthy parts of Osaka include Namba, Sakai-suji, and Tennoji, home to the Tennoji Park and the zoo.
